Why Grow and Propagate Adlai?

  • Adlai is expensive when bought in the market.
  • Adlai is easy to grow and maintain.
  • Adlai is a great whole grain alternative.
  • Adlai has a good amount of complex carbohydrates that are so much lower than brown and white rice.
  • Adlai is rich in protein and dietary fiber (a cup already has 14% of the daily recommended value), making it good for digesdtion too.
  • Adlai has been used for medicinal purposes: the high fiber and protein-packed grain shows promising results in anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and blood sugar-lowering properties.
  • Adlai is becoming a new, pampabusog staple for households looking for a healthier, diabetic-friendly substitute to rice, pasta, risotto, paella and other classic dishes.
  • Adlai looks and tastes close to rice, but has a slightly nutty flavor.
  • Adlai rice when cooked are softer in texture and more compact compared to white corn grits.

HOW TO PLANT ORGANIC ADLAI

           1. LAND PREPARATION

  • Plow and harrow the area
  • Dissolve 1 spoon of the included biofertilizer and plant growth stimulant in a 16L container with water and spray it onto the selected area for planting. Leave 500ml of the mixture for soaking the seed overnight.
  • Seed Preparation: Soak the seeds with the mixture for 8-14 hours prior to planting

    2. PLANTING

    - Planting Distance: Make furrow spaced at 90cm to allow plant to produce more productive tillers.
    - Sow 2 seeds per hill at a distance of 60cm in between hills.
    - Basal Fertilizer Application: Adlai is more productive when animal manure and compost are applied before plowing.

    3. CULTIVATION and MAINTENANCE

    ***DO NOT USE COMMERCIAL HERBICIDES
  • Off-barring: At 3-4 weeks after planting, cultivate between rows to remove weeds.

  • Thinning: At 2 weeks after planting, pull out excess plants to maintain at most two plants per hill.

  • Hilling up: 45 days after planting, hill-up within rows. Control subsequent weed growth by hand weeding.

    4. PEST MANAGEMENT

    - Do not use commercial pesticides.
    - You can consult with the nearest Dept. of Agriculture office to ask for Trichrogramma Evanescence. They eat stem borers that feed on Adlai seeds.

    5. HARVESTING

    - The crop can be harvested by cutting its branches and stems at 1 foot from ground level at 180 days after planting and to prepare the plants for ratooning.

    6. POST-HARVEST

    - Grains can be separated from panicle by threshing, and/or smashing (lambos).
    - Dry grains to at least 14% moisture content.
    - Adlai can be milled through rice and corn mills.
    - It has 45-60% milling recovery depending on the varieties.
    - Ratooning can be done 2-3 times after harvest of the main crop.

The different species of the fungus used in this fertilizer were isolated from Philippine forests, cultured in organic substrates and used as soil innoculant to improve seed germination, hasten seeding growth, and increase crop yield while reducing use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It provides balanced nutrition to crops by making available both micronutrients and micronutrients. It also controls a wide range of root diseases by colonizing the root surfaces and forming a barrier against the soil fungal pathogens while destroying them in the process, It also allows greater soil exploration by roots, encouraging longer, stronger and well-developed root systems.
